ABOUT THE SONG

Jonn texted me about an old 1950s 8mm film camera he found along with some 70 year old or so expired film. He made it clear that he had no idea how it was going to turn out... but I couldn't resist the mystery of a spontaneous adventure. I took him to two of my favorite spaces for escape... rest... creativity... and freedom and he followed along with one eye closed and the other peering through the lens. Fast forward to over a month later... he texted me saying that he found a place in Canada that could process the film (it got returned to him a time or two) and that it finally came back in the mail. With eager jitters and butterflies we opened up the file... and this is what we found.

Once the video was in my grasp, I camped out in my backyard with my guitar and my laptop (early Covid days) and wrote. I trashed several songs and shed many tears of frustration until I just broke... surrendered the process... and took a breath (after dramatic moments of visualizing myself smashing stuff… writers block is real peeps…) With a clear headspace, and a rediscovery of what it means to rest in the process, I wrote (for real this time). On a long late night in the studio as one instrument sang its melody after the other, piece by piece it all came together into one of my favorite creations this far. Out of this adventure, "The Deep End" was born.

"The Deep End" is a song about perspective... freedom... and rest in the midst of the worlds chaos. To remind the listener to be still, have grace, take your time, and just be.

PHOTOS

All captured on film by Jonn Sherrill (aside from one of them… take a guess), and a few fun edits done by me (flowers for brains). Different hues are due to different film.
